Bartok and Enescu are considered the two composition giants of Eastern Europe; don’t miss this concert featuring two of the most intense, festive, and exciting chamber music works ever composed! Our Wintergreen Festival Artists’ supreme virtuosity will be on display in Bartok’s Contrasts (written for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman) and Enescu’s Octet for Strings (a co-performance with The Aurelius Quartet, the 2016 Fellowship Quartet).
You might expect a percussion recital to be loud, rhythmic, and perhaps a bit clangy, but by the final week of the Festival, you’ll already know to expect the unexpected. Internationally active percussionist Justin Alexander will surprise you with a lyrical and intricate concert of Bach, Golijov, Hagen, and more.
Join the talented and engaging Joseph Kluesener as he takes us inside André Previn’s Bassoon Sonata. Employing elements of jazz, film music, blues, and even gospel, this classical chamber work is the epitome of an American composition and a prime example of the unexpected!
Rated one of the funniest 100 movies of all time by the American Film Institute, Sherlock, Jr. introduces us to the misadventures of a movie projectionist and janitor, played by Buster Keaton. Our Academy composers, under the guidance of Daron Hagen, will compose a new score to this film, to be performed by our Wintergreen Festival Artists, under the direction of Artistic Director Erin Freeman.
Performing his debut recital, Assistant Principal Bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra Joseph Conyers will be joined by our own Peter Marshall on piano for an unforgettable evening of music-making. This is sure to be a highlight of the Festival!
Artistic Director Erin Freeman and Composition Academy faculty member Gilda Lyons will bring their voices together with cellist Sarah Kapps in a setting of Sappho poetry composed by Daron Hagen. Come to the stunning Lookout to find out how a composer brings to life this ancient poetry in this intense and intimate trio.
(Some content may be considered for more mature audiences.)
This concert is sponsored by Stanley Rose and Susan Thomas in celebration of the birthday of legendary cellist Leonard Rose, born this day in 1918.
Trent Nicholas, Media Programs Coordinator for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, introduces us to the world of the mummy – as an artifact and as an inspiration for Hollywood. In addition to a complete showing of 1932’s The Mummy with Boris Karloff, we’ll present live music by composers featured in the film, including Tchaikovsky!
Haydn: String Quartet Op. 76, No. 2 “Quintet” (or “The Donkey”) Haydn: Divertimento in B-flat Major for woodwind quintet Plus, special appearances by Academy students!
Papa Haydn was more than the father of the symphony and the string quartet: He was the great jokester of the Classical era. He consistently inserted musical curveballs and humorous gags into his compositions, sometimes just to get a rise out of the audience. Perhaps you’ll be musically surprised, too!
