The Program

 The 2016 Arts Administration Fellows managed all elements of the Fellowship Quartet concert - from backstage operations to public speaking and fundraising. They managed the student ushers and the production team, and they even assigned Artistic Director Erin Freeman to "Golf-Cart Duty."

The Wintergreen Arts Administration Fellowship is suited to the graduate or undergraduate student interested in pursuing a career on the business side of the classical music industry. It provides students with hands-on opportunities and training in operations, marketing, development, patron communications, and personnel management.

Arts Administration Fellows will receive mentorship from Executive Director Julianne Akins ,Artistic Director Erin Freeman, Academy Manager Michael Priester, and Production Manager Michael Stewart, and in addition to attending workshops and meetings with other experts in this growing field. Each Arts Administration Fellow will receive full tuition, a room and board scholarship, and a travel stipend. They will be recognized as Fellows of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival.

The Arts Administration Fellowship Program focuses on three areas:

Leadership Fellows: Fellows in this area already have some experience in the field and will focus on deepening their knowledge of and honing their leadership skills in one of three areas:

  • Production Management

  • Educational Program Management

  • Patron Experience Management

Exploration Fellows: Fellows in this area may have some experience in arts administration but are interested in exploring all aspects under the umbrella. These students will be rotated through:

  • Production Management

  • Educational Program Management

  • Patron Experience Management

  • Festival Operations Management

Recording & Technology Fellows: Fellows in this area are focused on the technical execution of a production, with focus on audio recording and sound reinforcement. Experience will additionally be gained in other areas of technical production including concert lighting and stage management.

  • Hands-on experience in:

    • Marketing

    • Development

    • Patron communications

    • Operations

    • Personnel management

  • Sessions with administration experts in the field of classical music, including Wintergreen leadership and guest mentors

    • Full days in a fast-paced and artistically vibrant festival and academy setting

    • Time off to attend concert, hike, and explore the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains

    • Evaluations and letters of reference as requested
