Celebrate Your Creativity in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains
The Wintergreen Summer Music Academy (WSMA) has grown into a nationally recognized program over the years. In 2014, new programs are being added and existing programs are being re-defined. These are exciting developments, and we hope that young musicians will take advantage of all that Wintergreen has to offer. The WSMA programs take place at Wintergreen Resort in Wintergreen, Virginia, and they are mounted in conjunction with the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival.
Brief summaries of the WSMA programs:
The Composition Academy and the String Academy are four-week programs that enable talented young instrumentalists (violinists, violists and cellists) and composers to spend time in the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and work with an extraordinary group of professional musicians. The program consists of private lessons, chamber music coachings, seminars and multiple performance opportunities. In addition, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival is filled with concerts, lectures, theatre performances, dance performances and other events that Academy students are able to attend at no charge. The 2014 Composition Academy and String Academy will begin on Monday, July 7th, and end on Sunday, August 3rd. Academy members will be expected to arrive in Wintergreen by 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 6th.
The Flute Summit, Oboe Seminar and Trombone Workshop are instrument-specific, one-week programs with master teachers who are members of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra. Check the dates and details of each program. Participants in these programs will also be able to attend the many performances of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival at no charge.
The Quartet Fellowship Program will enable one pre-formed string quartet to be in residence at Wintergreen during the 2014 Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy. The members of the selected quartet will perform as members of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra, have ample time to rehearse as a quartet and be given numerous performance opportunities as Festival artists. The ensemble will receive regular coachings from Wintergreen’s highly regarded professional musicians and guest artists.
Recent Academy students have come to us from the Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, University of Michigan, The Hartt School, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Boston University, Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, George Mason University, Bowling Green University, Boston Conservatory, SUNY-Purchase, Virginia Commonwealth University and many other colleges, conservatories and universities.

Click here for information regarding transportation to the Wintergreen Resort – home of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy. Students are permitted to have cars, and there is ample free parking at the Blue Ridge Commons. While desirable, it is not necessary to have a car during the course of the festival. At least one member of the Quartet Fellowship Program string quartet needs to have a car since this group will have a very flexible schedule that will differ from the other programs.
Students without cars should make their travel arrangements in and out of Charlottesville, Virginia (only) using the frequent and convenient air, rail or bus services that are available. Charlottesville is less than an hour from Wintergreen by car. Transportation between Charlottesville and Wintergreen will be available on the first and last days of the month-long programs, as well as the first and last days of the week-long programs. Further details will be provided upon acceptance into the program.
