Bio

Lynn Bernhardt has performed as Principal Timpanist and Percussionist at the Wintergreen Festival since 2003. 

In 2014, after 35 years as a member of the percussion section, he retired from his position at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. While in New York City, he performed regularly with other metropolitan area ensembles, including the New York City Opera Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, the Opera Orchestra of New York, the Bard Festival Orchestra and the Long Island Philharmonic. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the American Symphony Orchestra, the New York Chamber Symphony and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. Appearing regularly on stage at the Met, as well as in the pit, he was the solo drummer in the Met’s most recent production of Verdi’s La Forza del Destino. As a member of the Met Orchestra percussion section he participated in that group’s extensive series of performances of 20th Century percussion music, sponsored by the New York Public Library.

Mr. Bernhardt premiered works for chamber ensemble with the Atlantic Sinfonietta, and appeared with the New York Trumpet Ensemble as solo timpanist and percussionist. He has recorded with both of these groups, as well as with the Met Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, and the New York Chamber Symphony.

Mr. Bernhardt has toured Europe and Japan with both the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera, and has performed with the Met Orchestra in major cities in the United States and at Carnegie Hall.

During the 1970s, Mr. Bernhardt was a member of the North Carolina Symphony. He holds the first Bachelor of Music degree awarded to a percussionist by the North Carolina School of the Arts.
