Douglas Kehlenbrink, bassoon



DOUGLAS KEHLENBRINK, bassoonist, is an active performer in the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area of the U.S. and is a devoted teacherof the instrument. He serves as Principal Bassoon with the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival Orchestra and the Concert Artists of Baltimore, the orchestras for the National Cathedral Choral Society, the Washington Chorus, the Choral Arts Society, Cantante Chamber Singers, the master Chorale of Washington, as well as the Alexandria (VA) Symphony Orchestra. He also appears regularly with the Filene Center Orchestra and Wolf Trap Opera Company at Wolf Trap Art Park, the Washington Concert Opera, and the Washington Bach Consort. He has held positions with the Shreveport Symphony, Shreveport Summer Music Festival Orchestra and the Roanoke (VA) Symphony Orchestra, where he served as Principal Bassoon from 1986-2007.

Kehlenbrink is heard in recitals and chamber concerts throughout the U.S. and Europe, most recently with the Concert Artists of Baltimore, as well as the Garth Newell Music Festival, at the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, England and in a European premiere for the College Music Society in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Kehlenbrink enjoyed a distinguished twenty-two year teaching career at James Madison
University and in 2000 was appointed Chair of the Arts at The Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA. Currently, he also teaches bassoon for George Mason University. His solo work was described by critics of the Baltimore Sun and the Roanoke Times as “extremely expressive” and “beautifully played”.

Mr. Kehlenbrink can be heard on recordings with the Concert Artists of Baltimore and has written for the Journal of the International Double Reed Society. His most enthusiastic audience includes his wife, Diane, his son Peter and their West Highland White Terrier, Tilley.
